The Revolution in Sicily - Calatafimi, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Revolution in Sicily - Calatafimi, 1860. Garibaldi, in his rapid rush from Marsala to Palermo, pounced, it will be remembered, upon Calatafimi, a town in the intendancy of Trapani. Its inhabitants have been variously estimated at from 5000 to 10, 000 - one authority, indeed, fixing the number as high as 20, 000. The town, which is of wretched aspect, was once dominated by a castle now in ruins. From this castle...an extraordinary country is seen - the land and rocks being in confusion, as if tossed about by some terrible earthquake'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print depicts the events of The Revolution in Sicily, specifically the town of Calatafimi in 1860. The image captures the chaotic aftermath of Garibaldi's rapid advance from Marsala towards Palermo. The population of Calatafimi is estimated to have been between 5,000 and 20,000 inhabitants, making it a significant target during the Expedition of the Thousand. The town, with its wretched aspect and ruins, once boasted a castle that now lies in ruins atop a hill. The surrounding land and rocks appear in disarray, as if recently shaken by a terrible earthquake. The castle, an imposing fortification, dominates the landscape and serves as a reminder of the town's past. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, providing a glimpse into the geography and regionalism of Sicily during the Risorgimento period. The print offers a poignant reminder of the upheaval and change that swept through Italy during this time, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the country's history and identity.
