EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Raoul Lufbery, a remarkable French-American fighter pilot and flying ace during World War I. Born in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 1885, Lufbery moved to the United States at a young age. When the Great War erupted, he bravely joined the French Foreign Legion before transferring to the French Air Service. As America entered the war, Lufbery became part of the US Air Service. With his exceptional skills and unwavering determination, Lufbery achieved his first aerial victory over Verdun on July 30th, 1916. Throughout his illustrious career as a fighter pilot, he went on to claim an impressive tally of 17 victories. Tragically, his life was cut short when he met his untimely demise by falling or possibly jumping from his burning plane on May 19th, 1918. In this monochrome portrait captured by an unknown creator from Heritage Images collection titled "Raoul Lufbery" we see a stoic and resolute man donning military uniform with pride. The image reflects not only Lufbery's individual courage but also symbolizes the bravery exhibited by countless men who fought valiantly during World War I. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of one man's extraordinary contribution to history while representing all those who served their countries amidst unimaginable circumstances. It stands as a testament to human resilience and sacrifice during one of humanity's darkest chapters - World War I.
