EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned photographer Ethel Davies in 1984, showcases the awe-inspiring Ramses Temple complex at Abu Simbel in Egypt. Carved into the western cliffs of Lake Nasser between 1274 and 1245 BC, these massive rock-hewn temples were constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses II as a tribute to himself and the gods. The larger of the two temples, dedicated to Ramesses II and the god Ra-Horakhty, is depicted in this image, with its iconic statues of the Pharaoh seated between two massive stone guardians, symbolizing the gods Wepwawet and Ptah. The temple's intricate carvings and colossal statues are a testament to the grandeur and power of ancient Egyptian civilization. In the late 1950s, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the subsequent flooding of Lake Nasser, the temples were relocated to their current site, where they continue to captivate visitors from around the world. This photograph, taken during the 1980s, captures the temples in their stunning glory, with the clear blue waters of the lake reflecting the sun-kissed cliffs and the vibrant colors of the temple complex. Ethel Davies' photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of ancient Egypt, and the enduring allure of its enigmatic past. This image is a must-have for anyone with an interest in history, archaeology, or the wonders of the ancient world.
