Progress of the Prince of Wales in British North America - Quebec, Canada East... 1860. Creator: Unknown

Progress of the Prince of Wales in British North America - Quebec, Canada East - from a drawing by our special artist, G. H. Andrews, 1860. The future King Edward VII visits North America. This chief seaport and stronghold of military power in British North America is situated on a rock-bound promontory formed by the junction of the Rivers St. Lawrence and St. Charles, and was for a long time the capital of Canada. It is strongly fortified and garrisoned, completely commanding the navigation, and by military authorities is declared impregnable...The wharves, considering the trade and the large number of ships and craft of every kind that frequent the port, are very limited in extent, besides being disconnected and unsuitable for business; but on the side bounded by the River St. Charles ample shipping accommodation and great improvements may easily be made...her great business is shipbuilding and the lumber trade. She annually launches, rigged and equipped for sea, some thirty to forty vessels of varying tonnage (1000 to 2000 tons or more), and exports some 33, 000, 000 cubic feet of timber, besides ashes, lumber, and other produce of the country, amounting together in value to somewhere about 5, 200, 000 dols'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Progress of the Prince of Wales in British North America - Quebec, Canada East," showcases a view of Quebec City, Canada, in 1860. The image was created from a drawing by G.H. Andrews, capturing the essence of this historic seaport and military stronghold in British North America. Quebec City, located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and St. Charles Rivers, was once the capital of Canada. Its strategic position made it a formidable fortress, with strong fortifications and a large military presence. The city's natural defenses, including its rocky promontory, made it virtually impregnable, according to military authorities. Despite its military might, Quebec City's wharves were limited in size and not well-suited for commercial activity. However, the potential for improvement was significant, particularly on the side of the river St. Charles, where ample shipping accommodation could be developed. Quebec City was renowned for its shipbuilding and lumber industries. Each year, the city launched thirty to forty vessels, ranging from 1000 to 2000 tons or more, into the St. Lawrence River. The lumber trade was another significant contributor to the city's economy, with an annual export of approximately 33 million cubic feet of timber and other produce, valued at around 5.2 million dollars. The photograph captures the Prince of Wales' visit to Quebec City in 1860, showcasing the bustling activity of the port and the grandeur of this historic city. The future King Edward VII's journey to British North America marked an important moment in the region's history, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the vibrant and prosperous city that welcomed him.
