EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the Prize Plate for the Chesterfield Cup, won at the Goodwood Races in 1850. The intricately designed vase, showcased in black and white, is of classical character with sea-horses adorning the handles. The ornaments closely follow ancient examples, featuring horses' hooves, stable implements, and other equestrian motifs. The bas-relief on the vase represents the race and Grand Stand at Goodwood. The cup is supported by centaurs, mythical creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. Sir George Hayter, a renowned British painter and engraver, designed this magnificent prize. It was manufactured at the esteemed establishment of Messrs. Hunt and Roskell, located in Bond-street, London. The Chesterfield Cup was run for the first time on the previous Friday, making this vase a significant historical artifact. The Illustrated London News, a popular Victorian newspaper, published a detailed description of the cup on its pages, providing an insight into the grandeur of horse racing events during the 19th century. The print, a testament to the era's appreciation for art and sport, continues to captivate viewers with its mythological elements and classical design. The centaurs, half-human, half-horse mythical beasts, add an element of fantasy and mythology to the prize plate. The sea-horses, or hippocampi, further enhance the classical theme, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between ancient mythology and the world of horse racing.
