The Prince of Wales at Montreal - Arch at the head of M'Gill Street, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales at Montreal - Arch at the head of M'Gill Street, 1860. The future King Edward VII visits North America. The Prince of Wales landed at Montreal on Saturday morning, the 25th August, and was received with the most enthusiastic demonstrations of welcome by about 60, 000 people. The occasion was probably the most striking ever witnessed in Canada. The streets were beautifully decorated - there being some tastefully-constructed arches; and the procession which accompanied his Royal Highness from the wharf after the presentation of an address from the Mayor embodied all the civic societies, the clergy, the fire brigade, the regular military, and the volunteers, not only of the city, but of distant places'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts a historic moment in Canadian history as The Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VII, makes his grand entrance into Montreal in 1860. The future monarch of Great Britain and Ireland is seen passing under an impressive archway at the head of McGill Street, surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd. The scene is described in the "Illustrated London News" as the most striking welcome ever witnessed in Canada, with an estimated 60,000 people lining the streets to greet him. The archway, a beautiful architectural feature, is adorned with intricate decorations and is a metaphor for the warm welcome extended to the Prince. The procession accompanying him from the wharf included various civic societies, the clergy, the military, and volunteers from Montreal and beyond. The black and white image, taken from an engraving in the "Illustrated London News," captures the patriotic spirit of the occasion and the sense of triumph that accompanied the Prince's visit to the British Empire. This print is a testament to the enduring power of royal visits to bring people together and create lasting memories.
