Presentation of New Colours to the 28th Foot, at Portsmouth, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Presentation of New Colours to the 28th Foot, at Portsmouth, [Hampshire], 1850....the presentation of the new colours to the 28th, by Lady Augusta Fitzclarence, took place, after consecration by the Chaplain-General of the Forces, the Rev. Mr. Gleig. The ceremony was commenced by piling the regimental drums, and throwing the new colours over the old. The torn and tattered were carried, at the word of command, into the rear, by Ensigns Hackett and Alpin, to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne"; the whole regiment presenting arms while the new colours were borne forward by Majors Adams and Wheeler, and waved in the face of the whole regiment, inscribed with the various battles in which the old ones had been borne - Egypt, Corunna, Barossa, Albuera, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Peninsula, Waterloo'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the nineteenth century, the presentation of new colours to the 28th North Gloucestershire Regiment of Foot takes place at Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1850. The ceremony, presided over by Lady Augusta FitzClarence, daughter of the Duke of Gordon, is a solemn and significant moment in the regiment's history. The presentation begins with the piling of the regimental drums and the removal of the old, tattered colours. Ensigns Hackett and Alpin carry the old colours to the rear, while the regiment presents arms and the new colours are borne forward. The new colours, inscribed with the battles in which the old ones had been borne - Egypt, Corunna, Barossa, Albuera, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Peninsula, and Waterloo - are waved in the face of the entire regiment. The ceremony is conducted with great ceremony and solemnity. The Chaplain-General of the Forces, the Reverend Mr. Gleig, performs the benediction, while Lady Augusta FitzClarence looks on approvingly. The regiment's horses stand quietly, their riders poised and attentive. The scene is reminiscent of a religious service, with the regiment's standard bearers opening their mouths to read the inscriptions on the new colours, and the Chaplain-General delivering a sermon-like blessing. The presentation of new colours was a time-honoured tradition in the British Army, symbolizing the continuity of the regiment and its connection to its history. This image captures the essence of that tradition, with its formal ceremony, its solemnity, and its connection to the regiment's proud past.
