EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in military history, as the Countess Poulett presents the Colours to the First Somerset Militia during the Crimean War in 1854. The scene unfolds on the Hoe, with the regiment, led by its Colonel, Lord Hinton, standing at attention, forming three sides of a square, two deep. The Colours, freshly procured from Messrs. Moore and Co. of St. James-street, London, are placed on a drumhead on the platform. The Reverend G.W. Lanymead then proceeds to consecrate the Colours, preparing them for their sacred role in battle. With great ceremony, the Countess Poulett presents the Colours to the two Ensigns, expressing her support and prayers for the officers and soldiers of the 1st Somerset as they carry the Colours into battle. This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the important role that community and tradition played in the military during times of conflict.
