Portrait of a Young Man, c. 1530. Like other paintings from the Dossi workshop, this work conveys the sitters social status and self-confidence. He holds a crumpled letter written in Italian. The words Asto, meaning " ship mast, " and mare, meaning " sea, " suggest that trade was a topic of this letter. References to anatomy and the word bella imply a discussion of the magnificence of human anatomy, an interest that spread rapidly during the Renaissance. The letter likewise communicates the young mans considerable education. This work was formerly called Portrait of Giuliano de Medici; however, the sitters lack of resemblance to Giuliano caused art historians to discount this argument. Portrait of a Young Man was earlier attributed to Dossos brother, Battista, before recently being considered a work by Dosso or a member of his workshop. As first suggested by Roberto Longhi, Portrait of a Young Man is now considered likely to be a work of an unidentified follower of Dossi from Friuli, Italy. The Friulian follower worked from 1510 until after 1530 and had connections to Dossis hometown of Ferrara, accounting for this works resemblance to Dossis style. The dark outlines and large forms of the work are of a later style than Dossi s, suggesting that the artist was a follower rather than Dossi himself

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic "Portrait of a Young Man" created around 1530 by Dosso Dossi, or possibly a follower from his workshop. The painting exudes an aura of social status and self-assurance, characteristic of works produced in the Dossi workshop. The young man depicted holds a crumpled letter written in Italian, offering intriguing insights into its content. The presence of words like "Asto" meaning "ship mast" and "mare" meaning "sea" hints at a discussion revolving around trade - an essential topic during that era. Moreover, references to anatomy within the letter suggest a fascination with human form and magnificence, which was prevalent during the Renaissance period. This correspondence also serves as evidence of the sitter's extensive education and intellectual pursuits. Initially believed to be Giuliano de Medici due to its former title, art historians have since dismissed this theory based on dissimilarities between the subject and Giuliano's known portraits. Instead, it is now thought to be the work of an unidentified follower hailing from Friuli, Italy - someone who worked closely with Dosso Dossi himself. The distinct dark outlines and large forms seen in this artwork indicate that it was likely executed by a devoted disciple rather than Dosso Dossi personally. Nonetheless, its resemblance to Dossi's style can be attributed to their shared connections with Ferrara – Dosso's hometown. Preserved through time as this mesmerizing print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images captures every intricate detail for admirers worldwide.
