EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, painted by Henry Inman in 1828, depicts Susan Johnstone Wallack, an accomplished actress and the wife of James William Wallack. Born to Irish comedian and singer John Henry Johnstone, Susan made her debut on the London stage in 1811 under the name "Little Bess." In 1817, she married James William Wallack, an actor and theatrical producer, and the couple frequently traveled to New York together. The Johnstones were part of the Prince of Wales's circle, and Susan continued to enjoy successful comic roles using her maiden name. Tragically, she passed away in 1851. This stunning oil on canvas painting, with its rich colors and intricate details, captures the essence of Susan's beauty and charisma. The portrait is a testament to the vibrant and colorful world of 19th-century American entertainment and the enduring legacy of its talented performers. This artwork is a treasure of American art history and a must-see for anyone interested in the history of acting and the arts in the United States. On display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, it invites us to reflect on the lives of those who shaped our cultural heritage.
