This striking portrait, painted by the Dutch artist Gaspar Netscher around 1683, depicts Mary Stuart, the wife of Prince William III of Orange, later known as King William III of England and II of Scotland. Mary, who was the daughter of King Charles I of England and Scotland and Henrietta Maria of France, was the last monarch of the House of Stuart to reign in England and Scotland. Mary is shown in the portrait wearing an elegant and richly decorated cloak, made of ermine fur, which was a symbol of royalty and aristocracy during the Baroque era. The golden fabric of her dress, adorned with intricate patterns and lace, adds to her regal appearance. Mary's attire is completed with a tall headdress, which features a large feather and a pair of golden roses, the symbol of the House of Tudor. The portrait also includes two exotic animals as accessories: a parrot perched on a branch in the foreground and a dead bird on the table behind Mary. The inclusion of these animals was a common practice in Baroque portraits, symbolizing the wealth and power of the sitter. The painting was likely created during Mary's time in the Netherlands, where she lived in exile after being deposed from the English throne. She married Prince William III in 1677, and together they ruled as co-monarchs of England, Scotland, and Ireland until William's death in 1702.
