EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century oil painting, titled "Portrait de deux échevins en fonction en 1702: Hugues Desnotz, à droite, et un inconnu, suppose Boutet, à gauche" (Portrait of Two Mayors on Duty in 1702: Hugues Desnotz on the Right and an Unknown Man, Supposedly Boutet, on the Left), was created by the renowned French artist Nicolas de Largillière in 1702. The painting depicts two men, dressed in the pompous attire of the Rococo era, standing before a grand, ornate background. On the right, we see Hugues Desnotz, a well-known figure of the time, wearing a rich red velvet cloak over a dress of the same color. His clothing is adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, and he wears a high, powdered wig. The man on the left remains unidentified, but is believed to be Jean Boutet, another mayor of Paris. He is dressed in a similar fashion, with a dark cloak and a matching dress, also adorned with gold and silver thread. The painting is a fragment of a larger work, and is currently housed at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. The two men are depicted in their professional attire, signifying their high-ranking positions within Parisian society during the early 18th century. The use of rich colors and textiles, as well as the intricate details of their clothing, serve to highlight the grandeur and opulence of the Rococo era. Nicolas de Largillière was a prominent figure in French art during the 17th and 18th centuries, known for his portraits of the French nobility and clergy. This painting is a testament to his skill as a painter, as well as a valuable historical artifact that provides insight into the fashion and society of the time.
