EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil painting depicts Piet Joubert (1831-1900), a prominent figure in South African history who served as Commandant-General of the South African Republic from 1886 to 1892. Born in the Netherlands, Joubert emigrated to South Africa in 1852 and became a key leader in the Boer resistance during the Second Boer War. In this portrait, painted by renowned Dutch artist Thérèse Schwartze in 1890, Joubert is shown in his late fifties with a full beard, exuding a strong and resolute demeanor. The painting captures the essence of Joubert's Dutch heritage, as well as his military and political roles. Joubert's career was marked by his leadership during the First Boer War and his service as Vice President of the Transvaal Republic. This portrait, which showcases Joubert's facial hair and the rich colors of his attire, is a testament to the historical significance of the Boer Wars and the political landscape of the late 19th century. The painting is now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a renowned museum showcasing Dutch art and heritage from the Middle Ages to the present day.
