EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrea Previtali's double-sided painting, "The Penitent Saint Jerome in the Desert and The Stoning of Saint Stephen," showcases two significant moments in the lives of two revered saints of the Catholic Church. On one side, we find Saint Jerome, the renowned Church Father and Doctor of the Church, deeply engrossed in penance and contemplation in the arid desert landscape. With a rock in hand, he symbolizes his ascetic lifestyle and dedication to the study of Scripture. Angels attend to him, offering him food and encouraging his devotion. On the other side, we witness the brutal event of the Protomartyr Saint Stephen's stoning. Surrounded by an enraged mob, Stephen, the first Christian martyr, maintains an unwavering faith and loyalty to his beliefs, even as stones rain down upon him. In the midst of chaos, two angels appear, one holding a palm branch, signifying the martyr's impending entry into heaven, while the other comforts him. This painting, created around 1526, is a testament to the contrasting themes of penance, contemplation, and martyrdom within the Christian faith. The masterful use of oil on wood by Previtali, a prominent artist from the School of Bergamo, brings these powerful scenes to life, inviting us to reflect on the enduring strength and resilience of faith amidst adversity. The work is now part of the esteemed Collection of the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy, and serves as a reminder of the rich artistic and spiritual heritage of the Roman Catholic Church.
