Pat Garrett, James Brent and John W Poe, sheriffs of Lincoln County, c1880-1882 (1954)

Pat Garrett, James Brent and John W Poe, sheriffs of Lincoln County, c1880-1882 (1954). Lincoln County in New Mexico was the scene in 1877-1881 of a violent conflict between cattle ranchers and merchants in which the outlaw and gunman Billy the Kid was a prominent participant. Pat Garrett (left) was elected sheriff of Lincoln County in 1880 and charged with tracking down and arresting the Kid, which he succeeded in doing after a shootout. Billy escaped from custody and in 1882 was shot and killed by Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Poe (right), who had been Garretts deputy, succeded him as sheriff in 1882 and Brent in turn was elected to the post in 1885. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the faces of three legendary figures from the Wild West: Pat Garrett, James Brent, and John W Poe. These men served as sheriffs of Lincoln County in New Mexico during a tumultuous period between 1880 and 1882. The county was embroiled in a violent conflict pitting cattle ranchers against merchants, with none other than the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid playing a prominent role. Pat Garrett, depicted on the left, was elected sheriff in 1880 with one crucial mission – to track down and apprehend Billy the Kid. After an intense shootout, Garrett succeeded in arresting him. However, Billy managed to escape custody only to meet his demise at Garrett's hands two years later in Fort Sumner. On the right stands John W Poe, who had previously served as Garrett's deputy before succeeding him as sheriff in 1882. Completing this trio is James Brent, who would assume office after Poe's tenure ended by being elected sheriff himself in 1885. This historic photograph offers us a glimpse into their determined faces; their mustaches symbolizing authority and law enforcement amidst chaos. It serves as a reminder of an era when lawmen like these were tasked with maintaining order amidst lawlessness and violence that defined America's untamed frontier - the Wild West.
