Paris Fashions for October, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Paris Fashions for October, 1854. Sarcenet Bonnet, with a feather, the inside trimmed with flowers; collar embroidered in satin-stitch, with long points. There is a great tendency to exaggerate the size of the collars, which should be avoided. Dress of chestnut-colour sarcenet, with three flounces, ornamented with a velvet pattern, woven in the silk; it follows the points of the flounces; in each point there is a small velvet bouquet. We have seen another dress with this little bouquet in coloured silk as well as the pattern which borders the flounces; the sleeves, opened at the inside seam, are formed with points similar to the flounces, and have the same border under-sleeves, in muslin'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to October, 1854, as we take a glimpse into the world of Parisian fashion, as depicted in this print from the "Illustrated London News." The image showcases an elegant woman adorned in the latest trends, starting with a stunning sarcenet bonnet. The bonnet boasts a large feather and is trimmed with intricate flowers on the inside. However, a word of caution is given to avoid the excessive enlargement of collars, which were a popular trend at the time. The dress, made of chestnut-colored sarcenet, features three flounces, each adorned with a velvet pattern woven in silk. The flounces follow the points of the dress, and in each point, there is a small velvet bouquet. The sleeves, with their open seams, are formed with points similar to the flounces and have under-sleeves in muslin with the same border. The Victorian era was known for its full, hoopskirted dresses, and this print is no exception. The woman's crinoline petticoat is visible beneath her voluminous skirt, adding to her regal appearance. The print also highlights the intricate lace and embroidery work that was common during this period. This fascinating image offers a glimpse into the fashionable world of 19th-century Paris, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of the time. The print, from the esteemed "Illustrated London News," is a testament to the enduring allure of fashion history.
