EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Paleontological and Archaeological Objects Collected from the Tyumen' Area," dates back to the 1880s and was captured by Russian photographer N Terekhov. The image is a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing a collection of archaeological and paleontological finds from the Tyumen' region in Siberia, Russia. The photograph is part of an album of images documenting the Aleksandrovsky School, which operated in the Siberian city of Tyumen from 1879 until 1919. Founded on the initiative of Governor-General of Siberia, Nikolai Gennadievich Kaznakov, the school was a pioneering educational institution that taught young men from the first to the sixth grades in Russian, German, and French, as well as various branches of mathematics, history, drawing, and religion. Through a project organized by American journalist and explorer George Kennan, the school received equipment from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This photograph, taken inside the school, reveals a room filled with intriguing objects of historical and scientific significance. The paleontological and archaeological items on display are a testament to the rich heritage and diverse history of the region. The sepia-toned image, with its aged and weathered appearance, transports us back in time, inviting us to explore the meeting of frontiers between science, education, and history. The photograph is a valuable addition to any collection focusing on the 19th century, Siberia, or the history of education and scientific discovery.
