EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking pair of allegorical figures, titled "Wealth" and "Prudence," were created by the Italian artist Giovanni Baratta around the 1710s. The sculptures once graced the facade of Palazzo Giugni in Florence, Italy, and are now part of the impressive collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Carved from white Carrara marble on later statuary marble pedestals, the figures stand as a testament to the artistic prowess of the Baroque period. "Wealth" is depicted as a regal woman, adorned with jewels and holding a cornucopia, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. Her voluminous robes flow gracefully, evoking a sense of opulence and grandeur. In contrast, "Prudence" is shown as a thoughtful and contemplative figure, clad in simple robes and wearing a crown of laurel leaves. She holds a mirror, reflecting the image of "Wealth," and a serpent, representing caution and wisdom. The green serpentine marble panels on the pedestals further enhance the visual contrast between the two figures. These allegorical figures are a prime example of the artistic school of the 18th century in Europe. The intricate details, the masterful use of color and contrast, and the profound symbolism make this pair a must-see for any art enthusiast. The figures' journey from their original home in Florence to their current residence at LACMA is a testament to their enduring value and significance in the world of art heritage.
