EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning pair of allegorical figures, titled "Wealth" and "Prudence," were created by the renowned Italian artist Giovanni Baratta around the turn of the 18th century. The sculptures, currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), were once part of the decorative scheme of Palazzo Giugni in Florence, Italy. Carved from white Carrara marble on later statuary marble pedestals, the figures are a testament to Baratta's mastery of the artistic techniques of the time. "Wealth" is depicted as a voluptuous woman, her ample figure adorned with jewels and coins, symbolizing the abundance and prosperity she represents. Her left hand cradles a cornucopia, overflowing with fruit and grains, while her right hand extends a coin to "Prudence," who stands next to her. "Prudence," represented by a wise and serene woman, holds a mirror in her left hand, reflecting the image of "Wealth," symbolizing the importance of self-reflection and careful consideration in the face of abundance. In her right hand, she holds an anchor, a traditional symbol of stability and security. The figures are set against a backdrop of intricately carved green serpentine marble panels and sections, adding to their visual appeal and artistic significance. The use of contrasting colors and materials highlights the harmony and balance between the two figures, making this a truly captivating work of art from the European artistic tradition.
