EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history when painters were hard at work on the White City tote in West London, 1932. Erected just in time for the Greyhound Derby of that year, the White City Stadium was renowned for its greyhound racing events. The sheer scale of this tote was unprecedented - it held the title of being the largest tote in the world. As we delve into some fascinating statistics, we learn that by 1939, this iconic stadium had set new records with an astonishing £14,341 turnover for a single race and an incredible £114,780 for a meeting. These figures would be equivalent to around £7 million today! It is no wonder that this historic venue became synonymous with excitement and anticipation. The image itself showcases a group of dedicated painters going about their job diligently. With ladders propped against the towering structure and brushes in hand, they contribute to creating an atmosphere where dreams are made and fortunes are won or lost. Their presence adds depth to this snapshot from "The Pageant of the Century" published by Odhams Press Ltd in 1933. This photograph not only immortalizes these anonymous craftsmen but also serves as a testament to Britain's love affair with betting and gambling during that era. It encapsulates both artistry and industry within one frame - a visual reminder of how sport can captivate our imagination while simultaneously providing employment opportunities for skilled professionals like these painters.
