Opening of the Leamington and Warwick Railway - Melbourne Grange Viaduct, 1844
Opening of the Leamington and Warwick Railway - Melbourne Grange Viaduct, 1844. The distinguishing feature of the line...is found in the undulatory character of its gradients. The entire length rises and falls like the surface of a gently rolling ocean...and these " ups and downs"...are so contrived that the impetus acquired in running down one incline is contrived exactly to compensate for the retardation of the succeeding ascent. An obvious example of this mode of construction occurs in the Melbourne valley...in the formation of a permanent way across it, it was held expedient to build, not a horizontal, but a curved viaduct, the lowest point being near the centre, a mode of procedure which has produced a great saving of material, and a considerable gain in the working speed. It is built of brick and stone and consists of seventeen elliptical arches, each thirty feet span. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the Opening of the Leamington and Warwick Railway - Melbourne Grange Viaduct in 1844. The railway line is renowned for its unique undulatory gradients, resembling the gentle rolling waves of an ocean. Ingeniously designed, these ups and downs were carefully calculated to ensure that the momentum gained while descending one incline perfectly compensated for the subsequent ascent. One remarkable example of this innovative construction can be witnessed in the Melbourne valley, where a curved viaduct was erected instead of a conventional horizontal structure. This creative approach not only resulted in significant material savings but also enhanced operational efficiency by increasing working speed. Constructed using brick and stone, this magnificent viaduct comprises seventeen elegant elliptical arches, each spanning thirty feet. The photograph provides a glimpse into an era when railway expansion was transforming landscapes and revolutionizing transportation. It showcases both engineering prowess and artistic beauty as it immortalizes this architectural marvel from over a century ago. Preserved through time, this image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress during an age marked by industrial advancements. It invites us to appreciate how innovation shaped our world while reminding us of our connection to history's transformative moments.
