Opening of the American Centennial Exhibition: Chorus singing the Centennial Hymn...1876. Creator: Melton Prior
Opening of the American Centennial Exhibition: Chorus singing the Centennial Hymn, from a sketch by our special artist, 1876. Bishop Matthew Simpson then offered up a prayer, which was followed by Whittier's Centennial Hymn, sung by a chorus of a thousand voices. The main building behind the chorus acted as a sounding-board, the Memorial Hall in front confining the sound. The general effect was far grander than could be expected in such open-air performance, producing from the surprised and delighted audience a rapturous burst of applause'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white image captures the moment of the Centennial Hymn performance at the Opening of the American Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1876. The scene is set before a grand architectural backdrop, with the main building acting as a natural sounding-board for the chorus of a thousand voices. The Memorial Hall in front confines the sound, creating an effect far grander than anticipated for an open-air performance. The audience, surprised and delighted, responds with a rapturous burst of applause. The event, which marked the centenary of American independence, was a cultural celebration of national pride and patriotism. The Centennial Hymn, penned by American poet John Greenleaf Whittier, was sung by a choir conducted by John Knowles Paine. The hymn's patriotic lyrics resonated deeply with the crowd, reflecting the spirit of the occasion. The image, created by Melton Prior from a sketch by Felix Élie Régamey for the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the historical significance of this momentous occasion. The black and white engraving captures the essence of the event, with the flags of various nations flying high, the crowd gathered in anticipation, and the pavilions and buildings of the exhibition in the background. This poignant moment in American history continues to inspire and captivate, a testament to the power of art and music to evoke emotion and bring people together.
