Nottingham Castle, Nottinghamshire, 1895. Artist: C Wilkinson
Nottingham Castle, Nottinghamshire, 1895. A castle has been sited on this rocky outcrop overlooking Nottingham since Norman times. The present castle mansion was built by Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle, after the restoration of Charles II (the previous castle had been razed to the ground after the Civil War). In 1831 it too was set on fire when the residents of Nottinghams notorious slums rioted. The building remained derelict until it was restored in 1878, since when it has housed a museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
Nottingham Castle, Nottinghamshire, 1895. This print captures the majestic Nottingham Castle perched upon a rocky outcrop overlooking the city of Nottingham. With its origins dating back to Norman times, this castle has witnessed centuries of history and transformation. The current castle mansion was erected by Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle, following the restoration of Charles II after the Civil War. However, it suffered a devastating fate in 1831 when it fell victim to flames during riots that erupted from Nottinghams notorious slums. Left abandoned and derelict for several decades, the castle was finally restored in 1878 and has since become home to a remarkable museum showcasing its rich heritage. The artist behind this exquisite depiction is C Wilkinson (Nottingham Castle's landscape captured with great attention to detail). This stunning image showcases not only the grandeur of the castle but also highlights its strategic location amidst rolling hills and alongside a serene river. The vibrant colors bring life to every element within the frame - from lush green reeds swaying gently in the breeze to intricate architectural details adorning each building. Transporting us back to late 19th-century England, this print serves as a testament to both historical fortification and artistic craftsmanship. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both natural beauty and man-made marvels intertwined harmoniously within Nottinghamshire's picturesque landscape.
