Northumberland House was built between 1605 and 1609 and destroyed in 1874. The lion on the arch at the top is now at Syon House. This print takes us back to the 18th century, specifically to Northumberland House in Charing Cross. The grandeur of this architectural masterpiece is evident as we gaze upon its magnificent facade. Built between 1605 and 1609, this historic house stood proudly until its unfortunate destruction in 1874. In the foreground of the image stands a remarkable equestrian statue by Hubert le Sueur, depicting none other than King Charles I himself. This iconic statue still graces Whitehall today, serving as a timeless symbol of power and resilience. As our eyes wander upwards towards the arch at the top of Northumberland House, we notice an intricately carved lion perched majestically. Although no longer residing here, this regal creature found its new home at Syon House. Transportation plays a significant role in capturing the essence of this era.
