The North Atlantic Telegraph - Julianshaab, Capital of South Greenland, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The North Atlantic Telegraph - Julianshaab, Capital of South Greenland, 1860. Julianshaab is the capital of the district embracing the southern end of Greenland. It contains about 350 inhabitants, and it is the residence of the Governor. It has a very good church, with an organ, and some very fine paintings. A courthouse has been recently erected, though there is but little use for a court of justice, and the building is principally for a place of keeping the records. On the completion of the telegraph it is expected to be made the capital of all Greenland. The town is situated on a small bay of a wide fiord, about ten miles from the sea. It is surrounded by very high mountains, which protect it from the northern winds. A fresh-water lake supplies it with water and salmon. The houses of the whites are of stone, mostly covered with slate. Double windows are not required. The Esquimaux mostly live in stone huts, covered with earth...There is a school at this place, and the Esquimaux are taught to read, write, and to praise their God the same as Europeans'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1860, showcases Julianshaab, the capital of the southern district of Greenland. With approximately 350 inhabitants, the town was home to the Governor and a small community of Europeans. The image reveals a thriving settlement nestled in a sheltered bay, surrounded by towering mountains that shielded it from harsh northern winds. The town's church, with its impressive organ and fine paintings, stood as a testament to the community's spirituality and artistic sensibilities. A newly constructed courthouse, though underutilized, served as a place for record keeping and, with the completion of the North Atlantic Telegraph, was expected to become the administrative hub for all of Greenland. The town's water supply came from a freshwater lake, teeming with salmon, and the houses of the European settlers were constructed of stone, with slate coverings. The Esquimaux residents lived in stone huts, covered with earth, and the community boasted a school where the Esquimaux children were taught to read, write, and embrace their faith. Julianshaab was a thriving and vibrant community, embodying the spirit of progress and cultural exchange in the heart of South Greenland.
