Newhaven fishermen and fishwives, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Newhaven fishermen and fishwives, 1862....the fisheries are one of the chief natural resources of Scotland...At Newhaven, near Edinburgh, there is a seat of the white fishery...In former times the women of Newhaven used to carry the fish caught by their husbands to Edinburgh and hawk them through the streets; and strangers visiting the metropolis of Scotland used to stare in wonderment at the stalwart dames in picturesque petticoats and manlike jackets...pursuing their useful calling...except suffering an occasional loss of nets or lines by means of a passing storm, [the fisher folk] are not subject to much fluctuation of income or expenditure. The boat, with its outfit of nets, sails, lines, etc. is worth from a hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty pounds sterling. It is usually a family affair, being the property of a father and his sons, or of two brothers, and so on. So that at the busy season of herring-catching and other periods it is filled by the family, with the aid, perhaps, of one or two hired lads, who are very likely cousins or other relations of the owner, and who, in all probability, will speedily have a boat of their own. The Newhaven fisher people are admirable examples of their class...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Newhaven Fishermen and Fishwives, 1862 - A Vibrant Community of Scotland's Natural Resources

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the daily life of Newhaven fisherfolk near Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1862. The scene showcases the resilient community that thrived around the white fishery, one of the country's primary natural resources. In earlier times, the women of Newhaven would transport the freshly caught fish from their husbands' boats to Edinburgh and sell them in the streets. Visitors to Scotland's capital were often astonished by the robust women in colorful petticoats and manly jackets, diligently pursuing their livelihoods. Their only significant setbacks were occasional storms that might damage their nets or lines. The Newhaven fisherfolk experienced relatively stable income and expenditure, as their boats, equipped with nets, sails, lines, and other essentials, were valued between £150 and £250. These boats were typically family-owned, passed down from father to sons or shared between brothers. During the bustling herring-catching season and other peak periods, the boats were filled with family members and perhaps a few hired hands, who were often relatives. The Newhaven fisher community stands as remarkable examples of their working class, displaying their determination, resourcefulness, and strong family bonds. Despite the challenges of the sea and the elements, they continued to thrive, making a valuable contribution to Scotland's economy and culture.
