'The front displays a central gateway, with pediments beautifully carved, and two side entrances; the wings consist of two square blocks of yellow brick with Portland stone dressings, pierced with six windows on the two floors, and surmounted by stone parapets with ball terminals. It is supported by iron girders, and constructed to admit or exclude the external air at pleasure...opening into this inclosure are some of the stables, of which there are in all ninety-eight stalls and twenty loose boxes. Behind...is a wide roadway, upon the side of which are some of the loose boxes (intended for entire horses and mares with their foals)...The architect of the whole building is Mr. Charles Freeman, of Lincoln's Inn; the builders are Messrs. Holland and Hannen, of Belvedere-road'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the new "Tattersall's" at Knightsbridge-Green in 1864. The architectural masterpiece, designed by Mr. Charles Freeman and built by Messrs. Holland and Hannen, exudes elegance and sophistication. The central gateway with intricately carved pediments, flanked by two side entrances, welcomes visitors into a world of luxury and opulence. The yellow brick wings adorned with Portland stone dressings house various facilities such as subscriber areas, secretary's offices, business departments, and harness-rooms. One can imagine the hustle and bustle of activity within the premises - from open-air betting to telegraph services for race enthusiasts. The massive roof made of Hartley's patent glass covers the entire yard, providing shelter while allowing controlled ventilation. The stables at the rear offer accommodation for ninety-eight stalls and twenty loose boxes, catering to prized racehorses in utmost comfort. A wide roadway leads to more facilities including additional loose boxes for entire horses and mares with their foals. This historical photograph not only showcases the architectural brilliance of Tattersall's but also offers a glimpse into the vibrant horse racing culture that thrived in London during that era. It is truly a timeless piece capturing an iconic landmark in British history.
