The New Houses of Parliament - Ventilating Shaft, River Front, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The New Houses of Parliament - Ventilating Shaft, River Front, 1854. Palace of Westminster, London....the New Louvre, or Ventilating Shaft, just completed for the exit of the vitiated air and smoke from the Libraries, and the whole of the Committee-rooms...The lantern is quadrangular in form, divided into three stages...At each angle, and in the centre of the flat side, is a light buttress, surmounted by crocketed finials...The top is carried into the air by a slight shaft, finished by a ball-cross. At the base of this shaft is a cluster of four smaller flying buttresses. The total height is about 68 feet...It might be expected that a contrivance of this kind would be an unsightly object - particularly in iron - of which material so little is done to please the taste; but, in this case, this turret, with its light crocketed buttresses, forms a pleasing addition to the river front'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The New Houses of Parliament - Ventilating Shaft, River Front, 1854, is an intriguing and visually striking image that showcases the architectural innovation and design excellence of the Palace of Westminster in London during the mid-19th century. The photograph captures the newly completed ventilating shaft, an essential component of the building's design to expel the vitiated air and smoke from the libraries and committee rooms. The ventilating shaft, often referred to as the New Louvre or the turret, is a quadrangular structure, divided into three stages. At each angle and in the centre of the flat side, a light buttress rises, topped with crocketed finials. The top of the shaft is carried into the air by a slight octagonal shaft, finished with a ball-cross. The base of this shaft supports a cluster of four smaller flying buttresses. Despite being primarily functional, the ventilating shaft is far from an unsightly addition to the river front. The light crocketed buttresses and the delicate octagonal shaft create a pleasing contrast against the grandeur of the Palace of Westminster. This architectural marvel, with its intricate details and harmonious design, demonstrates the architects' commitment to creating a visually appealing and functional solution for the Palace of Westminster. First published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the construction progress of the New Houses of Parliament and showcases the architectural ingenuity of the time. The ventilating shaft remains a testament to the architectural prowess of the past and a source of inspiration for contemporary architects and designers.
