Music (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #26), before 1467
Music (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #26), before 1467. By the late Middle Ages, the artes liberals--Grammatica, Dialectica, Rhetorica, Geometria, Arithmetica, Astronomia, and Musica--began to be represented in the visual arts as female allegorical figures. In this engraving, music is personified as a young woman seated upon a swan and playing a recorder, known simply as a flute in the 15th century. At her feet are numerous musical instruments including a portative organ, lute, shawm, harp, and rebec. The swan can be interpreted as a symbol of song, based upon the ancient belief that the bird, which is mute all its life, sings in exquisite tones shortly before it dies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving titled "Music (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #26), before 1467". During the late Middle Ages, the artes liberals were often depicted in visual arts as female allegorical figures. In this particular artwork, music takes on a human form as a young woman gracefully seated upon a swan while playing a recorder. The symbolism within this piece is rich and thought-provoking. The swan beneath her can be interpreted as representing song since ancient beliefs suggest that these birds sing beautifully just before their demise. Surrounding her are various musical instruments such as the portative organ, lute, shawm, harp, and rebec - all symbolizing different aspects of musical expression. Created by the Master of the E Series Tarocchi from Ferrara in Italy during the 15th century, this engraving exemplifies both artistic skill and cultural significance. It offers us a glimpse into how music was perceived and revered during that time period. With its intricate details and delicate lines expertly etched onto paper, this print captures not only an enchanting work of art but also serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with music throughout history.
