EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the early 1910s, three prominent American figures are captured in a thoughtful moment of conversation. Seated in the center is Mrs. Dora Kelly Lewis, an influential activist and suffragist, wearing a fur-trimmed coat and a stylish hat adorned with a large bow. To her left is Rep. Simon D. Fess, a lawyer and legislator from Pennsylvania, dressed in a formal suit and tie. To her right is Sen. Charles Curtis, a lawyer and future Vice President of the United States, also dressed in a suit and wearing a bowler hat. Mrs. Lewis was a key figure in the National American Woman Suffrage Association and helped found the National Woman's Party. She was also a member of the Silent Sentinels, a group of suffragists who staged peaceful protests outside the White House to advocate for women's suffrage. Her husband, Lawrence Lewis, was also a lawyer and active in the suffrage movement. Rep. Fess and Sen. Curtis were both influential politicians in their own right. Fess served in the House of Representatives from 1911 to 1913, and later became a judge. Curtis served in the Senate from 1915 to 1929 and went on to become the Vice President of the United States under President Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933. This photograph, taken by the renowned Harris & Ewing photographic studio, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in American history when the struggle for women's suffrage was at its height. The image is a testament to the power of activism and the determination of individuals to bring about change.
