Mr. Smythe, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Mr. Smythe, 1844. Portrait of British MP George Smythe. We are far from saying that Mr. Smythe is an unruly or ill-conducted man - quite the contrary; he appears to be, and we have no doubt he is, a very amiable and well disposed young gentleman; but such is the tyrant custom of society, that even this refined, and educated, and humanized specimen of humanity is obliged to assume the aspect of an ogre, and appear willing to imbrue his hands in the blood of a fellow man, whilst, with his natural dispositions, he would risk his life to save the worthless existence of a hound or horse....Mr. Smythe is above the common height, but slightly built, and having all the easy gracefulness of an accomplished gentleman. His age, we should say, is somewhere about thirty, although perhaps he looks younger. He is the eldest son of Viscount Strangford, and was elected for the borough of Canterbury in the year 1840, on the retirement of Lord Albert Conyngham. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Mr. Smythe, a prominent figure in British politics during the year 1844. The creator of this portrait remains unknown, but their skillful depiction showcases Mr. Smythe's refined and amiable nature. Despite his gentle disposition, societal expectations force him to adopt an intimidating demeanor akin to that of an ogre. It is a testament to the oppressive influence of customs and norms on even the most civilized individuals. One can only imagine how different Mr. Smythe's true character would be if not constrained by these social pressures. Tall in stature yet slightly built, Mr. Smythe exudes an effortless gracefulness that befits a gentleman of his standing. Though he appears youthful, his age is estimated at around thirty years old at the time this portrait was taken. As the eldest son of Viscount Strangford, Mr. Smythe inherited both privilege and responsibility from his noble lineage. In 1840, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Canterbury after Lord Albert Conyngham retired from politics. This remarkable photograph offers us a glimpse into history - capturing not just one man's likeness but also shedding light on the complexities and contradictions inherent within society itself.
