Mr. George P. Bidder, C.E. - from a daguerreotype by Mayall, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Mr. George P. Bidder, C.E. - from a daguerreotype by Mayall, 1856. Civil engineer. Mr. Bidder is convinced that Mental Calculation can be taught to children, and be acquired with greater facility and less irksomeness than ordinary arithmetic...it has been generally thought that Mr. Bidder himself has been indebted to unusual powers of memory and a natural mathematical turn of mind for the celebrity he has acquired. Now, Mr. Bidder emphatically declares this not to have been the case; he has sought every opportunity of comparing himself with boys and men who possessed this faculty, and, except so far as being carefully trained and practised in the cultivation and use of figures, he has not found that his memory was more than ordinarily retentive. In fact, whilst at school and at college, he had some difficulty in maintaining a decently respectable position in the mathematical class'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
great photograph capturing the intellectual curiosity and determination of Mr. George P. Bidder, C.E., as depicted in this stunning 1856 daguerreotype by the renowned photographer Mayall. Mr. Bidder, a celebrated civil engineer, is best known for his innovative approach to mental calculation, a method he believed could be taught to children more easily than traditional arithmetic. Contrary to popular belief, Mr. Bidder himself refuted the notion that his success was due to extraordinary memory or innate mathematical abilities. In an interview with the Illustrated London News in 1856, he shared that he had struggled to keep up with his mathematical peers during his school and college days. Instead, he attributed his achievements to diligent training and practice in the use of figures. The image of Mr. Bidder, with his serious expression and focused gaze, conveys a sense of deep concentration and intellectual prowess. His attire, consisting of a formal waistcoat and cravat, further emphasizes his professional stature as a civil engineer. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the life of an extraordinary individual who defied conventional wisdom and made significant contributions to mathematics education.
