Mr Days "The Ugly Buck", and Lord George Bentincks "
Mr Days " The Ugly Buck", and Lord George Bentincks " The Devil to Pay" - Race for 200 Guineas, at Newmarket, 1844. After one false start, which was occasioned by Algernon, the lot got off well together, but in a moment The Devil to Pay shot to the front, and obtained a lead of five or six lengths; The Ugly Buck was, however, soon at his quarters, and Wadastra colt well up with the latter on the near side, the rest following as well as they could... At this point it was quite evident that the race lay entirely with The Devil to Pay and The Ugly Buck, and so well did the former look that the only impression on the minds of the bystanders was that there would be The Devil to Pay amongst the Buckites at the finish. Down the hill they went with no perceptible change in their relative positions, but on reaching the Bottom The Ugly Buck was " persuaded" to get his head to the front, and after a good shaking he managed to beat The Devil to Pay by a neck !. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the thrilling race for the 200 Guineas at Newmarket in 1844, featuring two prominent horses of the time: Mr Days' "The Ugly Buck" and Lord George Bentinck's "The Devil to Pay". The atmosphere is palpable as the horses line up for the start, with one false start caused by Algernon. However, once they were off, it was clear that this would be a fierce competition between The Devil to Pay and The Ugly Buck. As they thundered down the track, The Devil to Pay quickly surged ahead, gaining an impressive lead of five or six lengths. But not far behind was The Ugly Buck, determined to catch up. Onlookers could sense that these two horses would be battling it out until the very end. Descending down the hill with unwavering speed and intensity, there seemed to be no change in their positions. However, upon reaching the Bottom stretch of the course, The Ugly Buck made a remarkable effort and managed to overtake his rival by a neck after some vigorous urging from his jockey. This historic moment left spectators awestruck as they witnessed an exhilarating display of skill and determination from both horses. This photograph serves as a testament to their extraordinary athleticism and showcases why horse racing has always been such a beloved sport throughout history.
