Monument of the Battle of Chillianwalla, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Monument of the Battle of Chillianwalla, 1864. 'Captain A. E. Paske, the Deputy-Commissioner of the district [of Gujarat, has sent] a photograph, taken at his request by Messrs. Fricke and Jung, of Murree, in the Punjaub, which represents the obelisk erected on the battle-field. This obelisk is upwards of 60 ft. in height, and stands on the site occupied by the field hospital during the action. It bears the following inscription, in four different languages: "Around this tomb was fought the sanguinary Battle of Chillianwalla, 13th January, 1849, between the British forces, under Lord Gough, and the Sikhs, under Rajah Shere Singh. On both sides did innumerable warriors pass from this life, dying in mortal combat. Honoured be the graves of these heroic soldiers. In memory of those who fell in the ranks of the Anglo-Indian Army, this monument has been raised by their surviving comrades, at whose side they perished, comrades who glory in their glory and lament their fall".' From "Illustrated London News", 1864
