Moifaa, 1911. Portrait of Moifaa, a New Zealand-bred racehorse who won the 1904 Grand National by eight lengths. Moifaa had travelled from New Zealand, only to be shipwrecked 50 miles off the coast of Ireland. The horse was discovered on a rocky outcrop off the coast, and it was believed he had swum to get there. He was carefully nursed back to health, and went on to win the National at Aintree Racecourse, ridden by Arthur Birch

In 1904, Moifaa embarked on a treacherous journey from his homeland to compete in the prestigious Grand National at Aintree Racecourse. However, fate had other plans for this resilient equine athlete. Tragically, the ship carrying Moifaa was wrecked just 50 miles off the coast of Ireland. Miraculously surviving the ordeal, he was discovered stranded on a desolate rocky outcrop. It is believed that Moifaa swam through treacherous waters to reach safety. Rescued and nursed back to health with unwavering dedication, Moifaa made an astonishing comeback. Ridden by jockey Arthur Birch, he triumphantly galloped across the finish line at Aintree Racecourse in 1904, winning the Grand National by an astounding eight lengths. This portrait immortalizes not only Moifaa's physical strength but also his indomitable spirit and sheer determination.
