Meeting of the British Archaeological Association at Shrewsbury, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Meeting of the British Archaeological Association at Shrewsbury, 1860. Stone pulpit of the Abbey; Tudor houses and shops; effigy of Hotspur Battlefield Church; Shrewsbury Battlefield; Haighmond [sic] Cliff and Castle...Among the famous old towns of England few could have been better selected for the purpose of antiquarian inquiry than the well-known capital of "'Fair Salopia"...The stone pulpit...is almost the only portion remaining which enables us to form an idea of this once important place......[nearby] is the famous battle-field of Shrewsbury, where Sir John Falstaff fought three hours by Shrewsbury clock, if he might be believed...In the middle distance is Battlefield Church, which was built soon after the battle, so that in it might be offered up prayers for the souls of those who fell in this fierce struggle...Haughmond Cliff, where, tradition says, the body of Hotspur was found after the battle, answers well the description of the "Bosky Hill" over which the sun rose so gloomingly on the morning of the important event. There are other features of this locality which show that Shakspeare, in order to have written the scenes in the play, must have carefully noted the spot'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1860, captures the Meeting of the British Archaeological Association at Shrewsbury. The image showcases a group of distinguished gentlemen gathered around various archaeological sites and landmarks within the historic town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. At the forefront of the scene, the stone pulpit of Shrewsbury Abbey stands as the focal point, almost the only remaining remnant of this once significant place. Nearby, Tudor houses and shops add to the picturesque landscape. In the middle ground, the Battlefield Church can be seen, which was constructed soon after the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403. This famous battlefield, where Sir John Falstaff famously fought for three hours by Shrewsbury clock, is depicted in the middle distance. The Battlefield Church was built so that prayers could be offered for the souls of those who perished in this fierce struggle. In the background, Haughmond Cliff, traditionally believed to be the location where the body of Hotspur was discovered after the battle, answers the description of the "Bosky Hill" mentioned in Shakespeare's play. This hill, with its rolling greenery, adds to the historical significance of the scene. Shrewsbury, with its rich history and ancient landmarks, was an ideal location for antiquarian inquiry. The British Archaeological Association, established in 1843, aimed to promote the study and preservation of archaeology and history in Britain. The members in this photograph were likely exploring and documenting the various historical sites within Shrewsbury, furthering the understanding and appreciation of England's rich heritage.
