EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a pair of exquisite woodcut prints, created by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch and Max Geisberg in the 16th century, and later assembled into a portfolio in 1937. The recto side features the Medallion Portraits of Henry II of Navarre and Margaret of Navarre, also known as Marguerite of Angouleme. Henry II, born in 1503, ruled Navarre from 1555 until his death in 1572. His wife, Margaret, was an influential writer, patron of the arts, and a key figure in the French Renaissance. The intricately designed medallions depict their regal heads, framed by ornate lettering and decorative elements. On the verso side, there are Portraits of Barbarossa and Muley Hassan of Tunis. Barbarossa, or Barbarossa the Redbeard, was a renowned pirate and corsair of the Mediterranean Sea during the 16th century. Muley Hassan, also known as Mohammed ibn Abi al-Hassan al-Burjibira, was the ruler of the Hafsid Dynasty in Tunis from 1534 to 1560. The black and white woodcut prints capture their strong, determined features, adding to the historical significance of this artistic treasure. These woodcut prints, originally part of the Bildtnussen der Romischen Keyseren series from 1558, have been preserved and showcased in various art institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago. The intricate designs, historical importance, and artistic mastery make this a must-see for anyone interested in art, history, or culture. The captivating portraits of these monarchs and figures from the 16th century offer a glimpse into the rich heritage of European history.
