The Martiniere, Lucknow, 1876. Creator: Crane

The Martiniere, Lucknow, 1876. At first glance one exclaims, "How beautiful! what a splendid building!" at the second, "Why, it must have been built by a madman!" At the distance of more than half a mile we can make out the eccentric array of statues, the huge lions heads, the incongruous columns, arches, pillars, windows, and flights of stairs leading to nothing, which are the distinguishing features of the Martiniere'. La Martiniere Boys College was founded by an endowment from the wealthy Frenchman, Major-General Claude Martin. Constantia, the palatial building which now houses the Boys College, was built in 1785 as Martin's country residence, and completed in 1802. The tower on the left is known as The Lat. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

The Martiniere, Lucknow, 1876 - A Vision of Architectural Eccentricity

EDITORS COMMENTS
At first sight, the Martiniere in Lucknow, India, leaves one in awe of its breathtaking beauty. But upon closer inspection, the mind is left puzzled, exclaiming, "Why, it must have been built by a madman!" From a distance of over half a mile, the eccentric array of statues, the colossal lion heads, the incongruous columns, arches, pillars, windows, and flights of stairs leading nowhere, all distinguish this unique architectural marvel. La Martiniere Boys' College, a renowned educational institution, was founded by an endowment from the wealthy Frenchman, Major-General Claude Martin, in 1835. The palatial building, known as Constantia, was built in 1785 as Martin's country residence and completed in 1802. The tower on the left, famously known as The Lat, adds to the intrigue of this architectural wonder. The Lat was built as a watchtower to protect against invasions. This engraving, from the "Illustrated London News," published in 1876, captures the essence of the Martiniere's grandeur and the enigma that surrounds it. The Martiniere, located in Lucknow, Oudh, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a testament to the imperialistic era and a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. The Martiniere, with its unique blend of European and Indian architectural styles, stands as a monument to the past, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India during the British Raj. The building's exterior, with its intricate details and unexpected elements, continues to captivate and inspire, leaving one with a sense of wonder and curiosity. This black and white print, created by Crane, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of imperialism and grandeur. The Martiniere, with its architectural eccentricities, continues to be a subject of fascination and a reminder of the past, standing proudly amidst the bustling city of Lucknow.
