Marquis of Abergavenny, 1876. Creator: Unknown

Marquis of Abergavenny, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Claudet. The Right Hon. William Nevill, now Marquis of Abergavenny, Earl of Lewes, and Baron Abergavenny...has been a Captain in the 2nd Life Guards, and was a Captain in the West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. Though the earldom is comparatively modern, having been attained in 1784, the barony, the original title, was of the date 1450. In the large part of West Kent in the midst of which Tunbridge Wells stands, and where the family estates are situated, the house of Abergavenny exercises a considerable influence, both social and political, and has not been chary in its efforts to support the cause of Conservatism, which circumstance will satisfactorily account for the step in the Peerage given to the present noble Lord by the head of that party'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black and white engraving from the Illustrated London News, published in 1876, we find a portrait of the Right Hon. William Nevill, who had recently been elevated to the title of Marquis of Abergavenny. The nobleman is depicted in formal attire, with a stern yet dignified expression on his face, adorned with an impressive set of whiskers. Born in the late 18th century, Nevill had served as a Captain in the 2nd Life Guards and the West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. Although the earldom of Abergavenny was a relatively modern title, having been acquired in 1784, the barony, the original title, could be traced back to 1450. The family estate was situated in a large part of West Kent, where Tunbridge Wells stood, and wielded significant social and political influence in the region. The Marquis of Abergavenny was known for his support of Conservatism, and his efforts to uphold the cause of the party earned him a step in the Peerage from the head of that party. The family estate, House of Abergavenny, maintained a considerable influence in West Kent, and the nobleman's political stance was a reflection of the region's conservative leanings. The portrait was created through the engraving process from a photograph taken by Francis George Claudet, a renowned photographer of the time. The image showcases the aristocrat's military background, with his uniform and regal bearing, and offers a glimpse into the aristocratic society of the 19th century. The print, a testament to the past, serves as a reminder of the historical significance of the Marquis of Abergavenny and the House of Abergavenny.
