Marie Francois Sadi Carnot, President of France, 1887
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph captures the esteemed figure of Marie Francois Sadi Carnot, President of France in 1887. With his commanding presence and distinguished beard, Carnot exudes an air of authority and statesmanship. Carnot's presidency marked a crucial period for the French Third Republic. Despite facing numerous challenges during his tenure, including a potential military coup by General Georges Boulanger in 1889 and the infamous Panama Scandals of 1892, he successfully steered the republic through these turbulent times. Tragically, this remarkable leader met an untimely end at the hands of an Italian anarchist named Sante Jeronimo Caserio. Following a powerful speech delivered at a banquet in Lyon on June 24th, 1894, Carnot was assassinated. This poignant image serves as a reminder not only of his significant contributions to French politics but also the fragility that often accompanies great leadership. The composition showcases Carnot seated confidently at a table surrounded by soldiers and political figures. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historical moment captured with precision by an unknown creator. As we gaze upon this print from "Album de Photographies dans L Intimite de Personnages Illustres" we are transported back to the nineteenth century—a time when men like Marie Francois Sadi Carnot shaped nations with their vision and determination.
