EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century portrait captures the elegance and grace of Maria Anna Victoria, Princess of Spain (1718-1781), also known as Mariana Victoria of Spain or Marie Anne Victoire of Spain. The Princess, who was the daughter of Elisabeth Farnese and King Philip V of Spain, is depicted in the portrait wearing an ornate baroque gown adorned with intricate floral designs and gemstones. Her mantle, draped over her shoulders, adds an air of regality to the image. The Princess's long, curly brown hair is adorned with flowers and pearl earrings, adding to her youthful and playful appearance. The painting, created during the Baroque era, is believed to be the work of the French artist Pierre Gobert. The location of the painting is unknown, but it is now part of the collection at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. The Princess, who was also the Queen of Portugal from 1761 until her death in 1781, is shown here as a young girl, likely in her late teens or early twenties. The use of rich colors and the attention to detail in the clothing and accessories demonstrate the high fashion of the time and the wealth and power of the Spanish monarchy. The inclusion of natural elements, such as the flowers in the Princess's hair and the plants in the background, reflect the connection between the royal court and the natural world during the Baroque period.
