Map - Scene of the Explosion of the Hounslow Powder-Mill, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Map - Scene of the Explosion of the Hounslow [Gun]Powder-Mill, 1850. It appears to be quite ascertained that the mischief commenced in what is called the "Treble Dusting-house, " i. e. the house for "dusting" or cleansing sporting powder, which was situate on the eastern margin of a fir plantation, with a field of turnips on the one side of it and the wood oil the other....At half-past three o'clock in the afternoon, the first explosion, the noise of which resembled that following the discharge of a park of artillery, took place in one of these buildings. Immediately afterwards, a dense cloud of smoke was seen rising into the air; and before it had cleared away several bodies were observed to fall in sundry directions amongst the trees. Two explosions of greater violence than the first quickly followed, by which the roofs of the corning-houses were driven high into the air'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This map print depicts the scene of the catastrophic explosion that occurred at the Hounslow Gunpowder-Mill in 1850. The exact creator of this map remains unknown, but the detailed information accompanying it was published in the Illustrated London News in the aftermath of the tragedy. The explosion is believed to have originated from the Treble Dusting-house, a building situated on the eastern edge of a fir plantation. This structure was used for dusting or cleansing sporting powder. Surrounding the dusting-house were fields of turnips to the west and the woodland to the east. At half-past three in the afternoon, the first explosion took place, producing a noise akin to the discharge of a park of artillery. A dense cloud of smoke soon rose into the sky, and before it had dissipated, several bodies were observed falling amongst the trees. Two subsequent explosions of greater intensity followed, lifting the roofs of the corn houses high into the air. The map offers a chilling representation of the aftermath of the explosion, with the labeled areas marking the locations of the various buildings and the surrounding landscape. The devastation caused by the explosion is evident in the charred remains of the structures and the destruction of the surrounding vegetation. This map serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with the production and handling of gunpowder, and the potential consequences of industrial accidents during the Victorian era.
