Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: the beehive, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: the beehive, 1862. This is the upper floor of a two-storied building upwards of 200ft. in length and 60ft. in width, erected specially for the manufacture of the Armstrong gun when it was first introduced to the service. It is here that the smaller parts of the gun are made, and the whole of the men in this branch, as well as generally throughout the department, are employed on piece- work, which is so thoroughly organised as to cheapen to the utmost the production of every article, whilst at the same time the workman realises good wages. On the right...is seen the section devoted to the making of the sights, which are of gun-metal, and fit into sockets on the gun, or, as in the case of the tangent sights, into a ring secured on the breech end of the gun...The workmanship on the sights is very delicate, and we were particularly struck with the beautiful precision of the work performed by a small machine over which a workman is seen stooping in the foreground...In the centre of the Engraving a line of artificers is seen busily engaged in the various operations connected with the manufacture of the saddles for the 100-pounder guns'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: the beehive, 1862," offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate process of producing the innovative Armstrong gun during the mid-19th century. The image depicts the upper floor of a vast, two-story building, measuring over 200 feet in length and 60 feet in width, which was specifically constructed for the Armstrong gun's manufacture upon its introduction to military service. The smaller components of the gun were produced in this space, and the workers, many of whom are seen in the photograph, were employed on piece-work. This meticulously organized system not only streamlined production but also allowed the workmen to earn substantial wages. The right side of the engraving reveals the area dedicated to the creation of gun sights. These gun-metal components fit into sockets on the gun or, as shown in the illustration, into a ring secured on the breech end. The workmanship on the sights is remarkable, with a workman intently focused on a small machine in the foreground, ensuring the precision of each piece. Centered in the photograph, a line of artisans is seen diligently working on the various operations required to produce the saddles for the 100-pounder guns. This image provides a unique window into the meticulous and complex process of manufacturing the Armstrong gun during its inception, showcasing the skill and dedication of the workers involved.
