Her Majesty's Visit to Germany, the Ducal Palace at Gotha... 1862. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty's Visit to Germany, the Ducal Palace at Gotha - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. Gotha, the capital of the duchy, is, alternately with Coburg, the residence of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to whom our Queen is now on a visit...Gotha is pleasantly situated on the Leina, here crossed by several bridges, and consists of the town proper and four suburbs, the former occupying the side of a hill in the form of an irregular polygon, surrounded by ramparts, which have been converted into promenades; and by a wall with four gates. The Ducal Castle or Palace, called Friedenstein, occupies the crown of the height on which the town is situated. It is a large and, from its elevated site, a conspicuous edifice, not possessed of much architectural merit, but surrounded by fine terraces, and containing an interesting museum, a good picture-gallery, and a large library. There are also other two palaces occupied by members of the Ducal family; seven churches; a gymnasium and numerous other, schools; the new mint, arsenal, theatre, house of correction, lunatic asylum, infirmary, and several hospitals...There are many pleasant excursions in the neighbourhood of Gotha, though its beauties are perhaps somewhat exaggerated by the natives'. Her Majesty's Visit to Germany - A Grand Welcome at the Ducal Palace in Gotha, 1862
EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of Germany, the picturesque town of Gotha, the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, played host to a royal visitor in 1862. Her Majesty's visit to this charming town, situated on the banks of the Leina River, was a much-anticipated event. Gotha, with its irregularly shaped town center, was a delightful blend of history and modernity, surrounded by ramparts converted into promenades and walls with four gates. The Ducal Palace or Friedenstein Castle, perched atop the hill, was the center of attention. This large edifice, while not architecturally remarkable, boasted fine terraces, an interesting museum, a good picture gallery, and a vast library. The palace was home to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and served as a residence for other members of the Ducal family. Gotha was not just a royal residence; it was a bustling town with numerous schools, including a gymnasium, and various institutions such as a new mint, arsenal, theatre, house of correction, lunatic asylum, infirmary, and several hospitals. The town's beauty was a source of pride for its natives, and its surroundings offered many pleasant excursions. The visit of Her Majesty to Gotha was an occasion for grand celebrations, and the people of Gotha welcomed their esteemed guest with open arms. This photograph, taken from a sketch by a special artist for the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of the royal visit to this enchanting German town. The Ducal Palace, bathed in sunlight, stands proudly in the background, a testament to the rich history and culture of Gotha.
