Her Majesty's Visit to Castle Howard - the Reception in the Great Hall, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Her Majesty's Visit to Castle Howard - the Reception in the Great Hall, 1850. Queen Victoria is a guest of the Earl of Carlisle at Castle Howard in Yorkshire. The hall...is extremely picturesque...There are piers carrying arches supporting a domical roof, in the centre of which is a large opening, giving light into the body of the hall from windows in the drum of the cupola...The lighting-up of the hall for the occasion of her Majesty's visit was beautiful in the extreme. Round the opening in the dome is a gallery of admirably wrought iron-work, and above this the loyal inscription of "God save the Queen" was displayed in large letters of jets of gas, forming a brilliant circlet of light...on one side [is] a fireplace of great boldness and originality of design...Antique statues and busts are placed on pedestals, and on the fireplace...'. Her Majesty's Visit to Castle Howard - the Reception in the Great Hall, 1850: A Regal Gathering in the Heart of Yorkshire This photograph print transports us back in time to the grand reception held in the Great Hall of Castle Howard during Queen Victoria's visit in 1850. The Earl of Carlisle, George William Frederick Howard, played gracious host to Her Majesty, who was accompanied by her husband, Prince Albert, and other esteemed guests. The Great Hall, a true architectural marvel, is described as 'extremely picturesque' in the Illustrated London News. Its impressive design features piers carrying arches supporting a domical roof, with a large opening in the centre, allowing natural light to filter in through windows in the cupola. For the special occasion, the hall was illuminated with gas lighting, creating a breathtaking spectacle. A circlet of light in the form of the loyal inscription 'God save the Queen' was displayed above the gallery of intricately wrought ironwork. The fireplace, a bold and original design, stood proudly on one side, adorned with antique statues and busts. The Earl of Carlisle, who was also known as Lord Morpeth, had spared no expense in ensuring a warm and inviting atmosphere for the esteemed guests. The interior decoration and design were meticulously planned, resulting in an unforgettable evening in the heart of Yorkshire. This evocative image provides a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of the past, offering a fascinating insight into the opulence of a bygone era.
