EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century opaque watercolor and gold and ink on paper portrait captures Maharaja Sher Singh (r. 1841-1843) of the Sikh Empire, seated indoors on a terrace, surrounded by three attendants. Maharaja Sher Singh wears traditional Sikh attire, including a long, flowing robe and a turban adorned with precious stones. He holds a sword in his right hand, signifying his military power and status as a ruler. One attendant presents him with a leopard, a symbol of strength and courage, while another holds a sword and the third one stands guard. The Maharaja's expression is calm and regal, reflecting his confidence and authority. This portrait, believed to have been created between 1840 and 1845, offers a glimpse into the rich heritage and traditions of the Sikh Empire in Punjab, India. The artwork is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), adding to its historical significance and value for scholars and art enthusiasts.
