M. Jullien's Concert at Drury-Lane Theatre - the Corps de Tambours, 1850. Creator: Unknown
M. Jullien's Concert at Drury-Lane Theatre [London] - the Corps de Tambours, 1850. Only conceive Jullien's ordinary orchestra extended and elevated to the very "flies, " the rear filled with players in uniform, from three military bands (the Royal Artillery, the Coldstream, and the 2nd Life Guards...), the centre occupied by the drummers of the French National Guards, with their Tambour Major, M. Barbier, perched with his golden stick on a raised platform, beneath which is the "ruler of the elements, " M. Jullien, on his golden throne, and the foreground filled with the stringed instruments! What a general is required to organize these formidable forces, and what a concentration of the entente cordiale, to see the French drummers fraternising with our red-coats. And the Tambour-Major, with his cocked hat placed rectangularly on his gallic head, how fierce and yet courteous does he look! From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'M. Jullien's Concert at Drury-Lane Theatre - the Corps de Tambours, 1850,' showcases an extraordinary musical event that took place in London during the mid-19th century. The image, created by an unknown photographer, captures the Corps de Tambours, or drum corps, during a performance led by the renowned French conductor, M. Jullien. The scene is set at Drury-Lane Theatre, with Jullien's orchestra extended and elevated to the flies, filling the rear of the stage with musicians from three British military bands: the Royal Artillery, the Coldstream, and the 2nd Life Guards. The center of the stage is occupied by the drummers of the French National Guards, with their Tambour Major, M. Barbier, presiding over them from a raised platform. Jullien himself, the 'ruler of the elements,' sits on his golden throne in the foreground, surrounded by stringed instruments. The organization of such a grand ensemble required a military general's precision and the diplomatic finesse of an ambassador. The image testifies to the strong bond between France and Britain during this period, as French drummers fraternized with their British counterparts. The Tambour-Major, with his cocked hat proudly placed on his gallic head, exudes a fierce yet courteous demeanor. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the rich musical and cultural history of the time, offering a unique perspective on the spirit of collaboration and unity between two great European nations.
