EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - Luther at the Diet of Worms, 1521. The German priest and scholar Martin Luther, known for his pivotal role in the Reformation, is depicted here amidst a crucial assembly of the Holy Roman Empire held in Worms, Germany. In this very gathering, Luther was declared an outlaw and excommunicated by Pope Leo IX. Despite facing such opposition, Luther's determination remained unshaken. Under the protection of the Elector of Saxony, he embarked on translating the Bible into German - a groundbreaking endeavor that would make scripture accessible to all. This monumental achievement laid the foundation for what would later become known as the Lutheran Protestant Church. The artist behind this powerful image remains unknown; however, their portrayal skillfully captures both Luther's resolute spirit and his historical significance. The vibrant colors bring life to this snapshot from "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" an album filled with cigarette cards produced by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Altona-Bahrenfeld in Hamburg during 1936. As we gaze upon this photograph today, it serves as a reminder of how one individual can shape history through unwavering conviction and intellectual prowess. Martin Luther's legacy continues to resonate within Christianity and beyond as his teachings sparked religious reform across Europe during the 16th century.
