Loveseat from Maes Millinery Shop, 1900-1950. Creator: Unknown

Loveseat with late Baroque style carved wooden frame and red velvet upholstry. The loveseat has curved front legs with trifid feet and splayed back legs. The high sides have rounded front rails with carved shells at the corners and a scalloped top rail that reaches upward toward the scalloped crest rail of the seat back. The center back of the crest rail has a carved design of feathered vines along the top edge on either side of a large shell. Carved wooden panels at the interior corners where the sides meet the back have a feather vine with a shell at the top. The seat and sides, including the reverse, are upholstered in red velvet. The upholstry covers the front seat rail to approximately one inch above the scalloped wooden edge. Mae Reeves (1912-2016) was a pioneering African-American milliner who was famous for her custom-made hats. Her business, Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia, was one of the first shops in the city to be owned by a woman of African American heritage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of furniture known as the Loveseat from Maes Millinery Shop, dating back to the years between 1900 and 1950. Crafted by an unknown creator, this loveseat exudes late Baroque style with its intricately carved wooden frame and luxurious red velvet upholstery. The exquisite details of this loveseat are truly awe-inspiring. The front legs gracefully curve forward, adorned with trifid feet, while the splayed back legs provide stability and elegance. The high sides feature rounded front rails embellished with beautifully carved shells at each corner. A scalloped top rail extends upwards towards the seat back's scalloped crest rail. At the center back of the crest rail lies a stunning carving depicting feathered vines on either side of a grand shell motif. Additionally, carved wooden panels can be found at the interior corners where the sides meet the back, showcasing delicate feather vines topped with shells. The entire seat and sides are expertly upholstered in sumptuous red velvet fabric that envelops every inch, including its reverse side. The upholstery elegantly covers the front seat rail up to approximately one inch above its scalloped wooden edge. It is worth noting that Mae Reeves (1912-2016), an influential African-American milliner renowned for her custom-made hats, owned Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia—the first shop in town owned by a woman of African American heritage. This photograph pays tribute to both her legacy as well as an exceptional piece of furniture craftsmanship from a bygone era.
