EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in French history - Louis XIII of France conferring the Order of the Holy Spirit. Dating back to the 17th century, this image showcases King Louis XIII (1601-1643) bestowing this prestigious knighthood upon an individual. Louis XIII ascended to the throne at a tender age of eight following his father's tragic assassination in 1610. Initially ruled by his mother as regent until he turned thirteen, Louis eventually took charge with the guidance of his trusted minister, Cardinal Richelieu. This marked one of the earliest instances of absolute monarchy. Dressed in exquisite period attire, Louis XIII is seen wearing a majestic hat and elegant clothing befitting his royal status. Holding a sword, symbolizing power and authority, he proudly presents it to an unidentified recipient who is about to become part of the esteemed Order of the Holy Spirit. The print itself comes from "La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles". Volume II, published between 1882 and 1884. It offers us a glimpse into seventeenth-century France - its monarchs, their grandeur, and their influence on society. With its monochrome aesthetic adding depth and character to this historical depiction, this photograph serves as both an artistic piece and an educational tool for those interested in exploring French royalty during that era.
